If an earthquake, storm, fire or other disaster strikes
your community, you might not have access to food, water and electricity
for days, or even weeks. By taking some time now to store emergency food
and water supplies, you can provide for your entire family.
Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in
an easy-to carry container such as a large, covered trash container, a
camping backpack or a duffle bag.
Below is a list of what should be included in your kit:
- Water: One gallon per person per day. Keep at least
a three-day supply of water per person.
- Food: Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable
food.
- First Aid Kit: Bandages, antiseptic wipes, anti-bacterial
ointment, etc.
- Non-Prescription Drugs: Aspirin, antacid, anti-diarrhea
medication, etc.
- Tools and Supplies: Portable radio, fire extinguisher,
flashlight, batteries, non-electric can opener, etc.
- Sanitation: Toilet paper, feminine supplies, bleach,
plastic garbage bags, soap, etc.
- Clothing and Bedding: Include at least one complete
change of clothing and footwear per person.
- Special Items: Remember family members with special
requirements, such as infants (diapers, formula, etc.) and elderly or
disabled persons (prescription drugs, insulin, eye glasses, etc.).
- Important Family Documents: Keep records in a waterproof,
portable container (bank account numbers, passports, wills, insurance
policies, etc.).
